Former Phillies Reliever Héctor Neris Joins Braves on Minor-League Deal
Héctor Neris, a former Philadelphia Phillies reliever, is returning to the National League East after officially signing with the Atlanta Braves on Monday. According to the team’s transaction log, the 35-year-old right-hander agreed to a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training.
Neris’ Career Journey
Neris, known for his fastball-splitter combination, has spent 11 seasons in the big leagues. He debuted with the Phillies in 2014, making a single-inning appearance before becoming a reliable bullpen arm the following year. His tenure in Philadelphia was marked by both highs and lows, including strong seasons, struggles, and a 2018 demotion to Triple-A before bouncing back. In total, he logged a 3.42 ERA with 84 saves across 405 appearances for the Phillies.
After leaving Philadelphia, Neris signed with the Houston Astros, where he played a key role in their 2022 World Series-winning team that defeated the Phillies. He followed that championship season with a career-best 1.71 ERA in 71 outings in 2023.
Recent Struggles and New Opportunity in Atlanta
Last season, Neris joined the Chicago Cubs, but after posting a 4.10 ERA in 62 appearances, he was released in August. He then returned to the Astros to finish out the year but was unable to secure a guaranteed major-league contract for 2025.
Now with the Braves, Neris will have the opportunity to compete for a roster spot during spring training. If he earns a place in Atlanta’s bullpen, he will frequently face his former team, the Phillies, against whom he has been dominant—having not allowed a single run in seven appearances against them in both regular season and postseason play.
