The Charlotte Hornets released guard Isaiah Wong on Thursday, ending his time with the team.
Wong had been playing on a two-way contract with the Hornets and appeared in 20 NBA games this season. During those appearances, he averaged 6.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while logging 13.3 minutes of playing time per contest. The 24-year-old now enters the waiver process, and if he goes unclaimed, he will officially become a free agent.
Wong, a former standout at the University of Miami, was selected in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers before being traded to the Hornets. He played a key role for Miami during his college career, earning ACC honors and helping the Hurricanes make a deep NCAA Tournament run. However, his transition to the NBA has been a challenge, as he saw limited opportunities with Charlotte while primarily serving as a depth option.
Now, Wong will look for a new opportunity elsewhere. If he clears waivers, he could sign with another NBA team, land a deal in the G League, or explore international options. Given his scoring ability and experience at the collegiate level, he may find another opportunity to continue developing his game.
Charlotte’s decision to waive Wong likely comes as part of roster adjustments as they evaluate their depth and make room for potential new additions. The Hornets have struggled this season, and making changes to the roster could be a strategic move to assess different players or free up space for other signings.
For Wong, the next step will depend on whether another team sees potential in him and claims him off waivers. If he goes unclaimed, he will have the freedom to explore his options and potentially find a better fit with a team that can offer him more playing time.
