Since it now looks like Sam Darnold and the Minnesota Vikings will part ways, the team will want to sign an experienced quarterback in free agency. The team’s perception of J.J. McCarthy’s ability to lead in his second NFL season after missing his whole rookie campaign due to a knee injury will determine how Minnesota handles the choice. The Vikings don’t have need to add a quarterback they think will have to start for a major chunk of the season — save for injury or some other unforeseen difficulty — if McCarthy is ready to start from Week 1. This opens up the pool of possible backups.
The odds On Monday, March 3, Shark published revised odds for Rodgers’ next destination, which put the Vikings in fifth place at plus-750. First at minus-150 were the New York Giants, then the Tennessee Titans (+550), Las Vegas Raiders (+400), and Pittsburgh Steelers (plus-250). Late in the upcoming season, four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers will be 42.
After injuring his Achilles tendon in his debut game with the New York Jets, he missed nearly all of 2023 and played for the team for the previous two years. The Jets were 5-12 last season, and Rodgers started all 17 of their games. In spite of his subpar on-field performance, Rodgers had a respectable season in terms of statistics. On a 63% completion rate, he amassed almost 3,900 throwing yards and 28 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions. Rodgers is still a viable starter in the NFL even though he isn’t the same player he was in his heyday, which included winning a Super Bowl with the Packers.
Given that New York dismissed Rodgers with one year remaining on his contract and owes him a sizable sum in 2025, he should also be reasonably priced. If winning is indeed Rodgers’ top aim as his career draws to a close, then his hunt for a new team can concentrate only on that. While the Vikings might require a starter in 2025, or at least for a portion of it, the Giants might require a player who can rescue the leaders’ positions for the duration of the season. Therefore, a team like New York could outspend Minnesota for a player like Rodgers if they were inclined.
Daniel Jones might be the one-year solution in Minnesota if Rodgers ends up somewhere else. After signing a $160 million contract, Jones was cut by the Giants in the middle of the previous season. After clearing waivers, he decided to sign with the Vikings. Fowler stated on March 2 that “re-signing Daniel Jones to play alongside J.J. McCarthy, whenever he’s ready off his knee injury, is one possibility that shouldn’t be overlooked in Minnesota.” “People I’ve talked to think the team really takes that into account.”
