Packers GM Hints at Possible Departure of Key Starter
The Green Bay Packers are no strangers to making difficult offseason decisions, and this year appears to be no different. As one of the youngest teams in the league, the Packers have made strategic roster moves that have contributed to consecutive playoff appearances. However, tough choices remain as they shape their future roster.
Recent comments from Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst have fueled speculation about the future of Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander in Green Bay. When asked about Alexander’s status for next season, Gutekunst offered a vague response, saying, “We’ll see. We’re working through that. He certainly could be. We gotta get him out there more… Not being able to be out there at his best has frustrated him and that has obviously frustrated our football team too.”
This uncertainty has only added to ongoing discussions about Alexander’s future with the team. Even before the Packers’ season ended, there were reports suggesting his departure could be imminent. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky previously reported in February that frustrations have grown within the organization regarding Alexander’s struggles with injuries and concerns about his ability to play through them.
While a trade remains an option, the Packers could also designate Alexander as a post-June 1 cut, which would free up $17 million in cap space. If released before June 1, the team would still save $6.8 million, though they would take on a larger dead cap hit.
Alexander, a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the league’s top cornerbacks when healthy, has been a key piece of the Packers’ defense since being drafted in 2018. However, injuries have plagued his recent seasons, limiting his availability.
As Green Bay continues to evaluate its roster, Alexander’s future remains uncertain. If he is indeed on his way out, it would mark the end of an era for the Packers’ secondary and create another major decision for the front office heading into the 2025 season.
