The San Antonio Spurs have added veteran center Bismack Biyombo to their roster, signing him to a 10-day contract. The move provides additional depth to their frontcourt and gives the team an experienced defensive presence in the paint.
Biyombo, 31, last played for the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this season, appearing in 30 games and averaging 5.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. He was waived by Memphis in January and has since been a free agent. Now, the Spurs are giving him an opportunity to contribute as they continue their season.
A 12-year NBA veteran, Biyombo was originally drafted seventh overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings before being traded to the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets). Over the course of his career, he has played for Charlotte, the Orlando Magic, the Toronto Raptors, the Phoenix Suns, and the Grizzlies. He is known primarily for his shot-blocking, rebounding, and interior defense rather than his offensive game.
For the Spurs, signing Biyombo adds depth behind rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, who has been carrying a significant workload in the frontcourt. Wembanyama has been the centerpiece of the team’s rebuilding efforts, but having a veteran like Biyombo could provide valuable minutes off the bench, particularly against physical opponents. Additionally, his experience could be beneficial in mentoring young players on the roster.
San Antonio has struggled this season, currently sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The team is focused on developing its young core while looking for short-term solutions to fill roster gaps. Biyombo’s signing aligns with that strategy, as it allows the Spurs to evaluate whether he can be a longer-term fit while also giving them a reliable presence in the paint for at least the next 10 days.
Throughout his career, Biyombo has been a reliable role player, often anchoring defenses and providing energy on the boards. His best statistical season came in 2017-18 with the Magic, when he averaged 5.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. While he has never been a dominant offensive player, his ability to contest shots and control the glass has made him a valuable contributor wherever he has played.
If Biyombo performs well during his 10-day stint, the Spurs could consider extending his contract for the remainder of the season. Alternatively, if they decide to go in a different direction, he will still have the opportunity to showcase his skills for other teams in need of an experienced big man.
For now, Biyombo joins the Spurs with a chance to prove he still has plenty to offer in the NBA. His first opportunity to suit up for San Antonio could come in their upcoming games as they continue their season.
