Most NFL fans are probably familiar with the name Asante Samuel. During his successful 11-year career, which included two Super Bowl victories, the four-time Pro Bowler and 2007 first-team All-Pro twice led the league in interceptions. Asante Samuel Jr., his son, is a good player in his own right but hasn’t nearly accumulated the same honors. He will be a free agent after playing for the Los Angeles Chargers during his first four seasons, when he had six interceptions. The Washington Commanders are one team that might consider him.
Top suitors were chosen for the top 25 of the Bleacher Report’s list of the top 50 free agents. Five players were said to fit in well with the Commanders. Among them was Samuel. Two San Francisco 49ers players, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and cornerback Charvarius Ward, were also linked to the Commanders. The Philadelphia Eagles’ Zack Baun and Milton Williams were scrutinized as good fits in Washington. Of those, some are more practical than others. After an All-Pro season, the Eagles are unlikely to let Baun go. Williams, who became a vital component of Philadelphia during their run to the Super Bowl, is likely to be able to say the same.
By defensive back standards, Ward is getting older as he starts his sixth season in 2025. After breaking his Achilles during Super Bowl LVIII, Greenlaw questions whether he will regain his previous level of performance. Commanders were linked to cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., a free agency. Samuel is a fascinating player who is unlikely to return to the Chargers. According to Kristopher Knox, Jesse Minter’s new defensive coordinator’s plan isn’t appropriate. Given that their defensive backs coach, Tom Donatell, coached the Chargers’ secondary in 2023, the expert contends that the Commanders would be a far superior fit.
For Washington, Samuel appears to be worth looking into. General manager Adam Peters has already established a strong record of success with free agent additions like Jeremy Chinn, Dante Fowler Jr., and Frankie Luvu who were underappreciated by their prior teams. Samuel would be a good addition, particularly if Marshon Lattimore’s career turns out to be in decline. With just over $82 million in salary cap space, the Commanders will have plenty of money to spend this offseason. The under-the-radar additions always make a difference, even though some of that will probably be devoted to attempting to create bigger splashes. In that sense, Washington ought to have Samuel at the top of his wish list.
