Phillies Sign Christian Arroyo and Oscar Mercado to Minor League Deals
The Philadelphia Phillies have bolstered their organizational depth by signing infielder Christian Arroyo and outfielder Oscar Mercado to minor league contracts. The deals provide the Phillies with additional options for depth as they prepare for the upcoming season. Both players have major league experience and will likely compete for roles within the organization.
Christian Arroyo’s Journey
Christian Arroyo, 28, has spent parts of seven seasons in Major League Baseball, most recently with the Boston Red Sox. A former first-round pick by the San Francisco Giants in the 2013 MLB Draft, Arroyo was once considered one of baseball’s promising infield prospects. However, injuries and inconsistency have limited his ability to maintain a full-time role in the big leagues.
Arroyo has played in 302 career MLB games, posting a .256 batting average with 24 home runs and 120 RBIs. While he has primarily played second base and third base, he also has experience at shortstop and first base, making him a versatile option for the Phillies’ infield.
During his time with the Red Sox, Arroyo had stretches of productive play, particularly in 2021 and 2022, when he posted respectable offensive numbers while playing solid defense. However, he struggled with injuries and was designated for assignment by Boston in 2023. After being claimed by the Cleveland Guardians, Arroyo saw limited playing time before becoming a free agent this offseason.
Oscar Mercado’s Experience
Oscar Mercado, 29, has spent parts of five MLB seasons in the outfield, primarily with the Cleveland Guardians. Known for his speed and defensive ability, Mercado had an impressive rookie season in 2019, hitting .269 with 15 home runs, 54 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases in 115 games. However, he has struggled to replicate that success in subsequent seasons.
Since his breakout year, Mercado has bounced between the majors and minors, seeing time with Cleveland, St. Louis, and San Diego. He owns a career .237 batting average with 26 home runs, 100 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases in 302 MLB games.
Mercado’s defensive versatility and speed make him a useful depth option for the Phillies, particularly as a potential bench player who can cover all three outfield positions. If he performs well in spring training, he could earn a spot as a backup outfielder or provide injury insurance in the minors.

With these signings, the Phillies add experienced players who could contribute at the major league level if needed. Arroyo offers versatility in the infield, while Mercado adds outfield depth and speed.
