Done Deal: Indianapolis Colts Finally Reached Agreement To Sign Former $160 Million Quarterback

The Indianapolis Colts have been linked to former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones as they look to solidify their depth at the position. With Gardner Minshew, Anthony Richardson, and Joe Flacco on the roster last season, the Colts managed to stay competitive. However, Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has struggled with consistency, raising concerns about his long-term potential as a franchise quarterback.

With Flacco set to hit free agency, Indianapolis must consider adding another quarterback to compete with Richardson next season. In his brief NFL career, Richardson has started just 15 games, posting an 8-7 record while completing 50.6% of his passes. While he continues to develop, the Colts need a reliable backup plan in case he fails to take the next step. Fortunately, with over $20 million in projected salary cap space, Indianapolis has room to bring in another quarterback.

James Boyd of The Athletic recently suggested that the Colts should pursue Daniel Jones in free agency. Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million deal with the Giants in 2023, has struggled to live up to expectations and could be looking for a fresh start. Boyd noted that Colts general manager Chris Ballard has already expressed the team’s intention to add another quarterback to push Richardson.

Boyd believes Jones could be the best available option, especially if Justin Fields remains with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Jones’ tenure in New York ended poorly, he did lead the Giants to a playoff win in 2022. His dual-threat ability would also allow the Colts to maintain a similar offensive scheme if Richardson were to miss time due to injury.

Although Jones has a career record of 24-44-1 as a starter and has faced criticism for his inconsistency, he could still provide valuable competition for Richardson. Boyd argues that bringing in a starting-caliber quarterback like Jones would serve as a test for Richardson—if he cannot secure his job over Jones, he likely was never the long-term answer at quarterback.

As the Colts evaluate their options this offseason, adding an experienced quarterback could be crucial in ensuring stability at the position, whether Richardson ultimately succeeds or not.
