The Boston Bruins have placed forward on waivers, according to a report from James Mirtle of The Athletic. If he goes unclaimed by another NHL team, McLaughlin is expected to be assigned to the AHL’s Providence Bruins.
McLaughlin had been recalled by Boston in late November and saw early playing time in December, appearing in eight of the Bruins’ first nine games that month. However, his role with the team diminished in recent weeks, as he found himself frequently relegated to the press box. He was a healthy scratch in eight of the team’s last 11 games before being waived.
The 25-year-old forward has spent the majority of his professional career bouncing between the NHL and AHL levels. Known for his strong two-way play and work ethic, McLaughlin provides depth at the forward position but has struggled to secure a consistent spot in Boston’s lineup. With the Bruins currently managing their roster for the playoff push, they likely opted to waive him to create flexibility and ensure he gets more playing time in Providence.
McLaughlin’s status will now depend on whether another NHL team claims him off waivers. If a team in need of forward depth sees potential in him, he could be picked up and given another opportunity at the NHL level. However, if he clears waivers, he will likely return to the AHL, where he can continue to develop his game and wait for another opportunity with the Bruins.
Boston’s decision to waive McLaughlin highlights the challenges fringe NHL players face in maintaining a roster spot, especially on a contending team. As the waiver process unfolds, his next step—whether remaining in the organization or joining another franchise—will be determined in the coming days.
