Virginia Tech has officially hired Philip Montgomery as its new offensive coordinator, ending speculation following Tyler Bowen’s departure. Montgomery, formerly the offensive coordinator at Baylor and head coach at Tulsa, will now lead the Hokies’ offense.
A Major Change for Virginia Tech
The Hokies are counting on Montgomery to elevate their offense to a competitive level in both the ACC and FBS. His coaching experience includes a notable tenure at Tulsa, where his team faced Virginia Tech in the Independence Bowl.
Montgomery also had success at Houston with quarterback Case Keenum and played a key role in Robert Griffin III’s Heisman-winning season at Baylor. His offensive philosophy is rooted in the Big 12’s Air Raid system, emphasizing quick plays, mobile quarterbacks, and a strong passing game to open up the run.
Head coach Brent Pry recently addressed the hire in a press conference, but one key detail stands out—Montgomery previously recruited Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones in high school, suggesting a strong understanding of his skills.

With several coaching changes happening rapidly, Virginia Tech’s staff has undergone significant upgrades. The next steps for the program will become clearer as spring football approaches.
