Micah Matthews Commits to Virginia Tech, Becomes Two-Sport Star for Hokies

Turner Ashby (Va.) standout Micah Matthews, one of the nation’s most dynamic two-sport athletes, has committed to Virginia Tech. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound playmaker is ranked as the No. 4 athlete in football and the No. 54 overall baseball prospect.

On Wednesday, Matthews announced his decision, choosing the Hokies over Kentucky, Maryland, NC State, Utah, and several others.

“The biggest reason was that they’re close to home and were my first football offer,” Matthews said. “Since that moment last April, everything has been smooth. My connection with the staff has been great, and my family has built a strong relationship with them, which is really important to me.”

A key factor in his decision was how Virginia Tech plans to use him in football. The Hokies envision Matthews in a versatile role similar to current player Jaylin Lane.

“They want me to play like Deebo Samuel—lining up in the backfield and making short-range plays,” Matthews explained. “That was a huge selling point for me. I love making plays all over the field and showing what I can do. The flex position is becoming more popular, and I’m excited to be part of that.”

Matthews’ relationship with wide receivers coach Fontel Mines dates back to his early football days.

“He first saw me at a James Madison camp when I was in fifth or sixth grade,” Matthews recalled. “He was coaching there at the time and followed my progress ever since. It’s crazy how things come full circle.”

In addition to football, Matthews will also play baseball at Virginia Tech and plans to graduate early to get a jump-start on both sports.

“My early enrollment will be a little different,” he said. “I’ll enroll in December, start football practice in January, but also prepare for baseball in the spring. I’ll attend as many football practices as I can during that time.”

Balancing two sports in the ACC will be challenging, but Matthews has the skillset to thrive.

According to 247Sports, Matthews is an elite athlete with size, speed, and playmaking ability. He recorded nearly 1,500 receiving yards as a junior, with 907 yards coming after the catch. His baseball experience has sharpened his tracking skills, making him a strong 50-50 ball receiver. He’s also a physical player who isn’t afraid of contact and contributes as a blocker.

While he still has room to grow as a receiver, Matthews’ raw talent and versatility make him an exciting addition to the Hokies in both football and baseball.
