Astros Retain Former Mariners Outfielder in AL West Update

The Houston Astros have re-signed former Seattle Mariners outfielder Ben Gamel, finalizing a one-year deal worth $1.2 million on Wednesday.

Gamel’s contract includes a $200,000 signing bonus along with a $1 million salary, though the salary is not guaranteed.

The Astros acquired Gamel off waivers from the New York Mets on Aug. 20. In his brief stint with Houston, he posted a .259 batting average, recording three doubles, four RBIs, and 11 walks across 22 games. His season was cut short on Sept. 14 after he fractured his left fibula while making a catch against the right-field wall on a deep drive from Mickey Moniak of the Los Angeles Angels.

During the 2023 season, Gamel hit .247 with one home run and four RBIs in 38 major league games. Additionally, he performed well in Triple-A Syracuse, batting .314 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs over 45 games.

Over his nine-year MLB career, Gamel has played for multiple teams, including the New York Yankees (2016), Mariners (2016-18), Milwaukee Brewers (2019-20), Cleveland Guardians (2021), Pittsburgh Pirates (2021-22), San Diego Padres (2023), Mets, and Astros. He holds a career batting average of .252 with 41 home runs and 204 RBIs.

During his three seasons with the Mariners, Gamel delivered solid numbers, slashing .270/.333/.395 with 43 doubles, nine triples, 13 homers, and 83 RBIs in 262 games.
