The Las Vegas Raiders have made significant coaching changes, parting ways with 10 assistant coaches as they reshape their staff under new leadership.
After a disappointing 4-13 season that led to the firing of their head coach and general manager, a major overhaul was anticipated. With the hiring of Pete Carroll as head coach and John Spytek as general manager, many expected them to make sweeping changes.
However, Carroll surprised many during his introductory press conference by expressing his desire to retain several members of the previous staff. He followed through on that by keeping defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, and defensive line coach Rob Leonard.
While it appears that Luke Steckel (tight ends), Gerald Alexander (safeties), Joe Philbin (offensive line), and Marvin Lewis (assistant head coach) will stay, Carroll has decided to move on from others.
Scott Turner recently accepted a role with the New York Jets, but reports that Ricky Manning Jr. would remain with the Raiders turned out to be incorrect, as he is now a coaching free agent. The release of wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett was somewhat unexpected, especially after Jakobi Meyers’ strong season, but the lack of development from the rest of the receiving corps may have influenced the decision. Meanwhile, Cadillac Williams’ departure seemed likely given the Raiders’ struggles in the running game, which ranked among the worst in the league.
Carroll has already begun assembling his staff, bringing in familiar faces from his time in Seattle, along with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. With free agency and the draft approaching, the Raiders are working quickly to finalize their coaching lineup.
