Virginia Tech Adds Former Bama Receiver via Transfer Portal
Virginia Tech football has bolstered its wide receiver group with the addition of former Wake Forest standout Donavon Greene through the transfer portal. This move provides much-needed depth to a Hokies offense that struggled with injuries and instability at quarterback during a challenging 2024 season. Head coach Brent Pry enters his fourth year in Blacksburg under mounting pressure to deliver improved results after finishing 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the ACC last season.
The Hokies’ announcement of Greene’s signing comes as a bright spot. Standing at 6’2″ and 210 pounds, Greene brings significant experience to the roster. During his time with the Demon Deacons, he caught 102 passes for 1,853 yards and three touchdowns. With one year of eligibility remaining, Greene is expected to take on a pivotal role in Virginia Tech’s offense.
While Pry has guided the Hokies to two consecutive bowl games, his overall record of 16-21 (10-13 in conference play) leaves much to be desired. The 2024 season saw Virginia Tech average just 28.2 points per game, ranking 11th in the ACC.
Despite a defense that allowed a respectable 22.8 points per game, offensive inconsistencies, particularly in the passing game, hindered the team’s progress. The Hokies ranked second-to-last in the ACC in passing yards, largely due to uncertainty at quarterback.
Throughout 2024, Pry rotated between Kyron Drones, William Watson III, and Colin Schlee at quarterback. Drones and Watson III remain on the roster, offering some continuity heading into 2025. However, the team faces a significant challenge with much of its receiving corps departing this offseason. Greene’s arrival is expected to address this gap, providing a reliable target for the Hokies’ quarterbacks.
Securing Greene is a crucial step for Virginia Tech as it looks to reclaim its position as an ACC contender. Under legendary coach Frank Beamer, the Hokies consistently competed for conference titles and national recognition. With the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format, Virginia Tech has an opportunity to reestablish itself on the national stage.
For Pry, the upcoming season is pivotal. Success in 2025 could reignite the program’s glory days and solidify his future in Blacksburg. For the Hokies’ passionate fanbase, the journey back to prominence starts now.
