The Kansas State football team is starting to suffer from a growing number of injuries at one crucial defensive position. Due to an injury sustained during Saturday’s 29-27 victory against Kansas at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Asa Newsom, a redshirt freshman linebacker who has participated in every game for the Wildcats this season, will miss the rest of the campaign.
During his weekly press conference on Monday, K-State football coach Chris Klieman stated, “Unfortunately, we lost him for the season with an injury.” “We’re down a little bit at linebacker.” When K-State travels to Houston later this week for an away game, linebacker depth may be an issue.
This month, Overland Park senior linebacker Beau Palmer also sustained a season-ending injury. Palmer and Newsom were both defensive backups for the Wildcats. Without them, K-State will need to get more from top contributors Austin Romaine, Austin Moore and Desmond Purnell, as well as unproven tacklers who might now see extra playing time.
“We’re going to have to do some things with our package to help that position out,” Klieman stated, adding that “some young guys have to be able to step up.” Newsom has made four tackles for the Wildcats this season, and he has seen as many as 27 defensive snaps during specific games. Newsom has previously had a difficult injury. After showing potential in his early appearances, he suffered a season-ending injury that kept him out of the remaining nine games of his redshirt season.
