Robert Tonyan, a former tight end for the Green Bay Packers, has had a challenging few weeks with the Minnesota Vikings. In order to create place for experienced running back Myles Gaskins on the active roster, the Vikings cut Tonyan in Week 6.
But before Minnesota’s Week 7 game against the Detroit Lions, the former Packers tight end was added to the 53-man roster, reuniting with the Vikings. However, Minnesota released Tonyan on Tuesday and added outside linebacker Bo Richter, so he didn’t stay on the active roster for long.
Tonyan was then added back to the practice squad by the Vikings. In Weeks three and four, the former Green Bay tight end was promoted twice from the practice squad. Before the Vikings decide whether to add Tonyan to the active roster, he has one more promotion.
Over the past two years, the 30-year-old tight end has found it difficult to match the stats he produced in Green Bay. In 2020, Tonyan had his greatest season with the Packers, catching 52 passes on 59 targets for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns, both of which were career highs.
Tonyan missed the remainder of the 2021 season due to an ACL tear he sustained after the 2020 campaign. Unfortunately, he was unable to recreate the same magic from 2020.
After playing for the Chicago Bears in 2023, Tonyan signed a one-year contract with the Vikings in the offseason.
In his lone season with the Bears, Tonyan caught 11 passes on 17 targets for 112 yards. Tonyan has 13 offensive and 33 special teams snaps in four games this season with the Vikings.
