Steven Nelson, a former star for the Oregon State Beavers, has announced his retirement from the NFL.
After nine seasons in the NFL, Steven Nelson has made the decision to hang up his cleats and retire.

The free agent cornerback, a former standout player for the Oregon State Beavers, announced to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 that he was retiring in 2023 after leading the Houston Texans to one of his best seasons to date.

Nelson said to Wilson, “I think it’s time for me to take a step back and spend more time with my family after thinking it over and having some talks with them.” “This coming month, we’re expecting a baby, so I wanted to focus all of my time and energy on that and other off-field business endeavors. I’m quite proud of the things I accomplished in the football game.

With four interceptions and twelve passes defensed, Nelson tied his career high and ranked second on the team. Nelson’s efforts helped the Texans qualify for the postseason in 2023. With an 82-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter of the Texans’ wild card victory over the Cleveland Browns, he made a big impact on the game.
Nelson was selected by Kansas City in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft (number 98). He spent four seasons in Kansas City before agreeing to a three-year, $25 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After two seasons, Nelson and the Steelers mutually decided to part ways, and he inked a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. After signing a $10 million, two-year contract, he moved to Houston, where he spent the previous two seasons playing.

During his nine seasons, the cornerback recorded 13 interceptions, 78 passes defensed, 456 total tackles, and one sack.

The 31-year-old Nelson left open the possibility of a future comeback to the league.

“I’ll always maintain my physical fitness and be prepared for any opportunity that presents itself, or if I sense that the time is right and my heart is in it, I’ll take it,” Nelson stated. “I think it’s best for me to step back right now and just enjoy my family.”
