In the 2024–25 season, Auburn football has had a difficult start, and the misery persisted in Week 5. The Tigers finished with a 2-3 record after Payton Thorne intercepted Oklahoma in the fourth quarter, for which he has been heavily criticized. After redshirt freshman Hank Brown made cameos in Auburn’s previous two games, head coach Hugh Freeze decided to reinstate the senior as the team’s starting quarterback.
Thorne had a strong first half of play, but with four minutes left in the game, Sooners defender Kip Lewis’ 63-yard interception return destroyed Auburn’s advantage. The Next Round on X, formerly Twitter, reports that Thorne feels he wouldn’t alter the pass if given another chance, despite Auburn’s 27-21 defeat.

In Week 5, Thorne had his greatest performance of the year. He completed 21 of 32 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns. On October 5, when they travel to Georgia, he will probably earn another start. Still, he couldn’t stop thinking about that play.

Even if that was the last thing Thorne needed to happen—he was regaining his position as Auburn’s unquestionable starting quarterback under center—there’s still hope that he can turn things around.
