The Connecticut Sun easily defeated the Indiana Fever 2-0 in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, ending the Fever’s season. Though confident going into the postseason, the Fever appeared to be plagued by inexperience. Caitlin Clark, a rookie who has averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game this season, is leading Indiana.
She was tied with Kelsey Mitchell for the team’s top scoring role and led the Fever in assists. In a Fever outfit, Mitchell had one of her best seasons ever, scoring a career-high 19.2 points per game to go along with 2.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists. Many Fever fans considered Mitchell and Clark to be a dynamic pair, but with Mitchell about to enter free agency, her future in Indiana is in doubt.
During her exit interview, she told the reporters that she had a few options and that she would have to be “selfish” and choose what was best for her. “It’s definitely a lot of emotions and thoughts that flow through my mind.” stated Mitchell. “I am unsure of my course of action, but I am confident that I will make the best decision for myself when the time and opportunity present themselves.
I have always lived in Indianapolis, so it may become my new home in the future. However, given the current dynamics of my family, I must act in my own best interests. I have to approach that process selfishly.” Social media supporters went crazy over her remarks, fearing that she was leaving Indiana. One fan remarked, “That doesn’t sound great.” One of the fans said, “It sounds like she’s gone.
” Another fan said, “Fever needs to up her pay.” “She’s gone,” a fan said. “It’s her decision, but hate to lose her. One fan remarked, “It sounds like she wants a change.” “She must be needed; we do. Another fan yelled, “Get her back and go sign Chennedy.
” Mitchell was possibly the most significant player for the Fever in 2024. Although the majority of the media attention was focused on Clark and Aliyah Boston, Mitchell was Indiana’s most reliable weapon. Since the later part of her rookie season, she has been a starter for the Fever, having joined them in 2018. Since her freshman year, Mitchell has never had a lower average than 12.7 points per game.
She is not only a superb scorer but also a reliable clutch player. In 2025, Mitchell will be a free agent without restrictions. She previously agreed to a $618,000, three-year contract, with a base pay of $212,000 in 2024. Mitchell will have turned 29 when she becomes a free agent. Although she hasn’t mentioned any teams she could be interested in signing with, it appears that she will consider all of her options considering Mitchell’s response to free agency.
