One victim of the injury bug has been taken.
Malik Taylor, a wide receiver with the New York Jets, was declared gone for the season. Due to his placement on the “reserve/injured” list, he will be ineligible for 2024.
The Jets made a corresponding signing of Jaylen Twyman, a former defensive tackle with the Miami Dolphins.

On the Jets, Taylor’s Misfortune Is Another Man’s Opportunity
Prior to his injury, Taylor was “trending toward pushing for a spot” on the 53-man roster, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

Taylor, 28, joined the Jets in the summer after being a less well-known former colleague of Aaron Rodgers. He ultimately made three appearances in games. He recorded two catches for 13 yards during that span.
The stat sheet omitted Taylor’s two most significant Jets games. In the Week 8 Jets vs. New York Giants game, Greg Zuerlein’s game-winning field goal was made possible by Taylor’s 30-yard pass interference call in overtime.
Taylor was the recipient of a 57-yard touchdown pass from Zach Wilson in the Hall of Fame game against the Cleveland Browns during the previous year’s preseason opener.
Rodgers had an impact on the play on the headset, which is why the clip went viral on “Hard Knocks.”
Zach Wilson gave #Jets fans optimism that he still had it a year ago in the Hall of Fame game with a 57-yard pass to Malik Taylor.
Wilson said to himself, “That was a dime and a half.” 🤣
Now that Taylor is out, there is a slot open for someone else to take advantage of. Some players may be able to make the 53-man roster.
A Novel Name to Pay Attention to in Defense
With one preseason game remaining, Taylor’s placement on injured reserve gave the Jets an opening on their 90-man roster.
Twyman, 25, was selected with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft, when he first joined the league. The Minnesota Vikings were where he played for the first 1.5 years of his professional career. After that, Twyman played for the Dolphins for 11 months.
He most recently played for the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL and the Birmingham Stallions of the former USFL. In order for Twyman to join the Jets in the NFL in August 2024, his contract was terminated.
In his short NFL career, he has yet to play in a regular season game.
Twyman doesn’t have a lot of time or chances to impress this Jets coaching staff because of the timing of this contract.
The Jets and Giants will square off in the preseason finale this final week of training camp. The 2024 season begins two weeks after that.
Instead of competing for one of the limited 53-man roster places, Twyman may have a far better chance of trying to make the team’s extended 16-man practice squad if he performs well.
In 2019, general manager Joe Douglas declared at his inaugural press conference that he would search far and wide for talent to bolster the Jets’ squad.
Working the trade market, waiver wire, free agency, and even the alternative semi-professional football leagues to develop talent, he has been a man of his word.
The Jets have one of the best football rosters going into 2024. That speaks highly of Douglas’ inventiveness.
