During practice on Thursday, the New Orleans Saints were given a serious fright. Due to a back issue, offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga, a rookie selected in the first round, had to miss practice.
Fortunately, it appears that the young New Orleans starter escaped serious harm. According to Dennis Allen, the head coach of the Saints, his status is not in question for Week 1.
Fans of the Saints shouldn’t worry about Taliese Fuaga’s problem.
For fans of the black and gold, that is a comfort. Before the season even began, the Saints had serious concerns about the offensive line.
Dennis Allen adds that if Fuaga is well, he will play this next weekend.
Right now, they are unsure of who will start at left guard or right tackle. Although there are still positional fights to be resolved, Fuaga has already secured the left tackle job for the New Orleans offensive.
This Sunday, watch for more from Landon Young as he looks to establish himself as a promising young offensive lineman. After some ups and downs in their opening preseason game, Trevor Penning needed a strong performance.
In his first NFL game, Fuaga had 12 pass-blocking snaps while allowing zero pressure. According to Pro Football Focus, the rookie tackle had a pass-blocking grade of 77.2. With Fuaga, New Orleans must play it carefully and take no chances during the preseason.
Against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend, we’ll see if the Saints’ anticipated long snapper makes an appearance on the field. In any case, Allen doesn’t think his back problem will prevent him from playing in the first week of the regular season.
