This summer’s Dallas Mavericks offseason has been one of the best in the NBA, and it all began when they acquired Quentin Grimes in a trade early in the process and signed Naji Marshall. Their most important move was the one that followed, but both of these moves contributed extra shooting and defense.
Klay Thompson was acquired by Dallas through a sign-and-trade, giving the Mavericks a third star to complement Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.
All of the aforementioned moves have the ability to propel Dallas to new heights, but one from last week isn’t receiving the attention it merits.
Spencer Dinwiddie officially signs a one-year contract with the Mavericks.
Spencer Dinwiddie was purportedly signed by the Mavs to a one-year contract last week; the Mavs PR confirmed the agreement on Saturday.
Dinwiddie averaged 10.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 39.2 percent from the field during his last season with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers. Even though Dinwiddie’s season wasn’t the most productive, his performance in Los Angeles showed promise.
Dinwiddie is ready to bring that same defense to Dallas after putting together some of his best defensive performances of his career in Los Angeles.
Because of everything that Dinwiddie accomplished during his previous stay with the franchise, fans are eager to see him back in Dallas, where he will likely get large minutes right away. Throughout the 2022 NBA Playoffs, Dinwiddie was a fantastic complementary scorer for Luka Doncic, and it was breathtaking to watch him step it up in the big moment.
The Mavs needed further experience to supplement their inexperienced roster, and Nico Harrison and company made a wise choice in acquiring Dinwiddie, who is familiar with Jason Kidd’s system and the workings of the club.
In addition to being a rotation player who can play both on and off the ball and serve as a spot starter when necessary, Dinwiddie can serve as a mentor to the younger guards like Jaden Hardy. It wasn’t discussed enough during his initial stay with the Mavs how well he fit on the court next to Doncic, and he will be a reliable off the bench player who could raise the team’s ceiling.
