There was uncertainty on Tuesday regarding the arrival of quarterback Matthew Stafford during contract negotiations as the Los Angeles Rams made their way to Loyola Marymount. Stafford was nowhere to be seen when players started to arrive. The media conference with head coach Sean McVay was originally scheduled for 9:30 a.m. PT, but it was rescheduled for 11:30.
The players had until 12:00 to report, but neither Stafford nor McVay had shown up at the platform. When McVay did show up, he verified that the team and Stafford had reached an agreement on a revised contract.
It’s crucial to understand that this is a contract adjustment rather than an extension before continuing. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Rams quarterback was hoping for a contract with more guaranteed money before the NFL Draft. In 2022, Los Angeles faced a comparable circumstance involving Aaron Donald. Donald received a new contract from the Rams, but it wasn’t an extension. All Donald received, for the three years left on his contract, was a $40 million rise with extra guarantees. His contract allowed him to choose to retire in the last year of the agreement.
It is clear that there was more going on with Stafford’s contract than just the quarterback’s desire for higher guaranteed income. Giving the player what they want is an easy concept to implement. From a club perspective, though, it’s also critical to keep in mind that Stafford is 36 years old, and extending his deal would eliminate any remaining flexibility.
Having saying that, you cannot approach your franchise quarterback with mixed feelings. The Rams had to decide what to do. After a successful 2023 that featured an unanticipated postseason berth, Stafford needed to start camp alongside the other players. Jimmy Garoppolo was the quarterback getting reps, so there was no way that McVay could start training camp later than the rest of the league or be unable to conduct practices the way he wanted.
That’s not a criticism on Garoppolo; rather, it’s a statement of how crucial both this season and next year are. With Stafford at quarterback, the Rams’ window of opportunity to win is narrow. It almost seems ridiculous to waste time on the commercial side of sport and contract negotiations. It was evident that McVay arrived, gathered everyone, and adopted a “let’s get this done right now” mentality.
Even while McVay played down his involvement in the contract talks, he was crucial to closing the agreement. Ultimately, this was a coach who has exceptional communication skills advocating for his quarterback to resolve the issue. McVay stated,
These objects have several layers to them.What I heard from him was truly all that mattered to me.My attempt is to approach this by saying, “Let’s listen to understand and let’s communicate to connect,” and then let’s try to find a solution.”How do we put together the most competitive team that can sustain based on what we think that looks like relative to things that we’ve learned over seven years?” is one of our obligations as leaders, as well as mine.I’ve probably studied and delved into this kind of material to the point where, at the very least, I can express an informed opinion in which, while I’m not claiming to be correct, this is our understanding of our roles as team leaders, and you can use that knowledge to have appropriate discussions in light of it. Having a conversation with Matthew and realizing what matters was fantastic.
These contract conversations can occasionally turn acrimonious. While it’s a component of the game, fans prefer not to focus about the financial side of things. Sometimes the point of the talk gets lost in the midst of what was probably multiple phone calls between the agent and the team. On Tuesday, it was evident that McVay wanted to get everyone in one place, talk things over, and come up with a solution that satisfied everyone.
McVay made multiple references to “honest conversations” on Tuesday. It’s difficult to guess what those candid talks were about, if anything other than worries about Stafford’s aging and impending decline. Stafford is thirty-six years old. At 37, Matt Ryan participated in his final season of play. A shell of his former self, Ben Roethlisberger played until the age of 39. At the age of 36, which is the same as Stafford right now, he had his last successful season. The Rams were undoubtedly considering all of those scenarios.
Stafford, though, is coming off of an incredible season in which he occasionally displayed the playmaking ability of a top-5 quarterback. There will undoubtedly be some assurance that he will keep up his current standard of performance. Father time remains unbeaten. McVay stated,
I truly enjoy my friendship with Matthew because it allows us to be open and honest with each other. He was excellent, and there were some genuine talks that I believe were necessary for us to be able to go in the proper route.We never reached a stage when there was anything other than I hope we’ll be even better, which is something I always admire about our relationship. I believe that honest communication occurs.We can all agree that sometimes our perspectives are a little off, so let’s make an effort to connect and listen in order to understand one other.You become emotional or anything, but I believe that in this case, the relationship and communication won out, and for that, I am grateful.
McVay has undoubtedly improved in the area of communication and applied what he had learnt from the past. It became evident during the Jared Goff fiasco that necessary talks had never been had. That made room for issues to worsen for the partnership to fall apart. These negotiations clearly demonstrate the close relationship between McVay and Stafford. Though it’s unlikely that we’ll ever learn the details of these “honest conversations,” it’s a positive development from one of the NFL’s youngest head coaches.
The Rams will be able to go into training camp full swing with Stafford present, and McVay has a big part in that. While McVay shouldn’t constantly be involved in contract negotiations, Stafford needed to be on the field on Wednesday, and the Rams head coach wasn’t going to let it happen any other way. Although it’s unclear if Stafford would have genuinely held out, McVay is a big part of the team’s lack of “what if” concerns.
