Recently, the Dallas Mavericks decided to sign guard Spencer Dinwiddie back for a single season in order to bolster their lineup for the 2024–25 campaign. Before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Kyrie Irving, Dinwiddie played 76 games during the regular season and 18 playoff games with the Mavericks in 2021–2023.
After witnessing the incredible skills of star guard Luka Doncic up close, Dinwiddie stated in a recent street interview that he thinks Doncic is the best player in the NBA right now. “The NBA’s top player at the moment is… Although he didn’t win MVP this year, I believe Luka Doncic should have.”

During his historic 2023–24 season, Doncic led the Mavericks to 50 victories and the NBA Finals while averaging 33.9 PPG, 9.8 APG, and 9.2 RPG. He was third in the MVP voting behind Nikola Jokic and Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, despite his incredible stats. For what it’s worth, he did win the ESPY award for best NBA player.
One of the main reasons the Mavs won Game 7 of their Semifinal series against the Suns was because of Spencer Dinwiddie, who played for the squad that advanced to the 2022 Western Conference Finals. Even though he hasn’t played as well as he did during those playoffs with the Nets and Lakers, the Mavericks are still optimistic that he can be a valuable guard off the bench who can provide Doncic and Irving with a break when they need it.
However, Dinwiddie might only be saying this to win back the support of Mavericks supporters. He chose to join with the Lakers over the Mavs after being dismissed by the Toronto Raptors last season, likening the Mavs to a spoilt mother and the Lakers to a “tough love” father. Many fans brought up that comment again when the news broke on Monday, and he will probably be questioned about it whenever he speaks to the media.
