1991 – Two naked spectators run onto the field at Fulton County Stadium and slide into home plate. The Braves beat the Cubs 12-2.
2001 – Rico Brogna announces his retirement, effective immediately. He will be replaced on the roster by Bernard Gilkey. Undeterred, Greg Maddux would earn his 34th career shutout in a 4-0 win.
MLB History
1903 – Rube Waddell gets arrested for striking a fan who had criticized his pitching. Connie Mack bails him out of jail.
1922: Ty Cobb sets an American League record with his fourth five-hit game of the season. The Tigers win 16–7 after overcoming a 5-0 deficit in the first inning.
1934 marks Babe Ruth’s 2,000th career walking event. With 2,062 walks, he will hold the record when he retires.
Joe DiMaggio ends his 56-game hitting streak in 1941.
1951: The Reds defeat the Phillies 9–8 thanks to a four-hit game and a runner out at home in the ninth inning by Joe Adcock.
1962: In a 7-5 loss to the Reds, Sandy Koufax leaves after the first inning. Due to a circulatory issue with his index finger, Koufax will be sidelined until the end of September.
In 1974, Bob Gibson becomes the second pitcher in history to record 3,000 strikeouts by striking out Cesar Geronimo. Six years from now, Geronimo will be Nolan Ryan’s 3,000th strikeout victim.
1978: In the tenth inning of a tie game against the Royals, outfielder Reggie Jackson tries to bunt despite Billy Martin’s orders, reigniting the rivalry between him and the Yankees manager. The Yankees lose 9-7 in the eleventh inning when Jackson appears. Jackson will then be placed on five days of unpaid leave by Martin.
Don Mattingly becomes the first player in the American League to smash a home run in seven straight games in 1987.
1990: After diving to try to catch a line drive off the bat of Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson breaks out for three home runs, including his 100th of the season. The Royals prevail 10–7 despite Sanders’s dash around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Due to the injury, Jackson will be out for the next six weeks.
2001: Ozzie Guillen, the coach of the Expos, is ejected before the first pitch is delivered after pursuing a dispute with umpire Greg Gibson from the previous evening.
