One more player was added by the Chicago Blackhawks on the opening day of NHL free agency. Kyle Davidson has made significant improvements to the roster by adding six new players and re-signing one from the previous season. The Blackhawks have strengthened their blue line with the addition of defenseman TJ Brodie, who signed a two-year contract worth $3.5 million AAV.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs for the previous four seasons, Brodie recorded 26 points (one goal, 25 assists) in 78 games. Following his inking of Alec Martinez earlier in the day, Brodie now adds another seasoned player to the Blackhawks’ blue line.
The Blackhawks made an effort to strengthen their shot-blocking unit, which is something that Brodie is known for. Together, the Hawks blocked 1,340 shots the previous season; on Monday, Brodie and Martinez combined for 324 blocks.
While not the most striking addition, Brodie is a good addition for Chicago. The blue line is also deeper than it has been in a long time, which enables this team to keep developing its younger defensemen at their own pace because veterans can cover the necessary gaps.
Kevin Korchinski might play in the AHL this season because of the numbers on the blue line. Furthermore, with the crowded blue line, Artyom Levshunov is almost a lock to play in the AHL or return to Michigan State the following season. Ultimately, it’s a smart move that advances the rebuild while enabling the young defensemen to mature and contribute significantly in Rockford.
Davidson is probably done for good now, barring any surprise signings. All things considered, this roster has been greatly improved by the front office for the upcoming campaign.
