Virginia Tech Football: Former Starting Offensive Lineman Enters Transfer Portal

Virginia Tech’s offseason roster reshaping continued this week with the news that veteran offensive lineman Bob Schick is officially entering the NCAA transfer portal. Schick, a graduate senior who has been with the Hokies since 2021, announced his decision on Tuesday.

Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 304 pounds, Schick originally hails from Midway, Utah. Before transferring to Virginia Tech, he began his college football career at Snow College, a junior college in Ephraim, Utah. Schick joined the Hokies in 2021 but did not see game action during the regular season that year. He made his debut in Virginia Tech’s appearance at the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl.

The following season in 2022, Schick saw increased involvement, appearing in 11 games. Most of his time came on special teams, although he did get some reps on the offensive line at right guard. Schick’s role significantly expanded in 2023 when he became a key contributor to the Hokies’ offensive front. He played in all 13 games and started each one, anchoring various positions on the line, primarily right tackle, although he had experience at guard as well.

Over his three seasons with Virginia Tech, Schick played in 23 games, including 23 starts. His versatility along the offensive line was a valuable asset for the team, and his presence helped stabilize the line during a period of transition for the program.

Schick’s departure is part of a broader wave of changes on Virginia Tech’s offensive line heading into the 2025 season. Several other key linemen are also moving on. Left tackle Xavier Chaplin and center Braelin Moore have entered the transfer portal, while Parker Clements and Kaden Moore have completed their eligibility and graduated. These departures mean that the Hokies will be fielding an entirely new starting offensive line next season.

The overhaul up front coincides with changes to the coaching staff, including a new offensive coordinator and a new offensive line coach, Matt Moore. Moore, who was previously at West Virginia, has brought in three of his former players to help reshape the Hokies’ offensive line. At least two of those players are expected to be in the starting lineup this fall, providing experience and continuity in the midst of the transition.

While Schick’s time in Blacksburg has come to an end, his contributions will not be forgotten. His development from a junior college transfer to a multi-year starter in the ACC speaks to his work ethic and adaptability. As he searches for his next opportunity, Schick brings with him valuable experience, positional flexibility, and the maturity of a graduate senior.

Virginia Tech fans and staff alike are wishing him success wherever he lands next in his football journey. With plenty of starting experience and a strong frame, Schick is likely to be a desirable addition for a program in need of offensive line depth.
