Breaking News: ASU’s Cam Skattebo a ‘Hard One to Project’ This NFL Draft Season

Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo has drawn attention from NFL scouts throughout the 2024 college football season, but as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, he’s becoming one of the most polarizing prospects on the board. While his work ethic, versatility, and physicality have won him praise, many analysts agree: Skattebo is “a hard one to project.”

At 5-foot-10 and around 220 pounds, Skattebo is a stocky, powerful runner who thrives between the tackles. His bruising style and willingness to lower his shoulder for extra yards have made him a fan favorite in Tempe. But despite putting up solid numbers at ASU after transferring from Sacramento State, his draft stock remains uncertain due to several factors.

“He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t fit cleanly into a box,” one NFC scout said. “He’s not the fastest, and he doesn’t have elite explosion, but you can’t ignore the fact that he moves the chains and doesn’t go down easy.”

Skattebo’s 2024 season saw him rack up over 1,100 all-purpose yards and 12 total touchdowns, showing off his dual-threat capability as both a runner and a pass-catcher. He also displayed a knack for special teams and even lined up at quarterback in wildcat formations, proving his football IQ and willingness to do whatever the team needs. That versatility, while impressive, may actually be contributing to the uncertainty surrounding his NFL projection.

“He’s a tweener in some ways,” said a Pac-12 analyst. “He does everything well, but nothing at an elite level that makes him a surefire Day 1 or Day 2 pick. Teams just don’t know where to slot him.”

Despite the skepticism, Skattebo’s intangibles are considered top-tier. Coaches rave about his leadership, his film study habits, and his blue-collar mentality. Those qualities could make him a steal for a team willing to take a chance in the later rounds.

Another challenge Skattebo faces is the current state of the running back market in the NFL. With many franchises devaluing the position and leaning heavily on committees, it’s harder than ever for backs without elite measurables to stand out. Skattebo may not run a blazing 40-yard dash at the combine, but if he tests well in agility and strength drills, he could elevate his stock and pique the interest of teams in need of a tough, all-purpose back.

For now, Cam Skattebo remains a wildcard. Some analysts see him as a sixth- or seventh-round pick with upside, while others believe he could go undrafted and fight for a roster spot in training camp. Regardless of where he lands, his mentality won’t change.

“Draft or no draft, I’m gonna show up and work,” Skattebo said in a recent interview. “That’s who I am.”

With the 2025 NFL Draft approaching, all eyes will be on Skattebo’s pro day and combine results. One thing’s for certain: underestimate him at your own risk.
