ESPN REPORT: Indiana Fever Beat Chicago Sky, Dallas And Los Angeles Sparks To Sign Top Veteran WNBA MVP Today

Embraces New Role with Indiana Fever

Veteran guard Sydney Colson is set to join a rapidly improving Indiana Fever squad, bringing leadership and experience to a team that is poised for success in the upcoming WNBA season. The Fever, who ended the 2024 campaign on a high note by securing a playoff spot, have strengthened their roster by adding several experienced players to complement rising stars Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston.

Colson’s Role with the Fever

Colson, a two-time WNBA champion with the Las Vegas Aces, may not be a high-volume scorer like fellow newcomers Natasha Howard, DeWanna Bonner, or Sophie Cunningham, but she understands exactly what she brings to the team. Speaking to the media, Colson emphasized her commitment to contributing through leadership, defensive energy, and reliability.

“I’m bringing veteran leadership, knowledge, energy, swinging the defensive momentum,” she stated. “I’m just that person that’s dependable. I’m always gonna come in and do my job and be happy in my role.”

Her confidence in embracing this role stems from her discussions with Fever head coach Stephanie White, who made it clear during the free agency process that Colson was a valued addition. This level of recognition was something Colson hadn’t experienced much in her career.

“I’ve never been considered a lot in free agency, so for her to see my value, it meant a lot,” the 35-year-old admitted. “I want to play on the court more in my last couple seasons in the league if I have that opportunity.”

Building on the WNBA’s Momentum

Colson has witnessed firsthand how the WNBA’s popularity has surged in recent years, particularly with the success of the Las Vegas Aces and the arrival of Caitlin Clark. She recognizes that the league is entering a new era of exposure and excitement, and she’s eager to be part of that movement.

“What I always thought about when I was on a team that wasn’t getting that visibility [was] whenever you play the teams that are, that’s when you bring your best game,” Colson explained. “I think what we’re going to be able to do, with the Aces, the [New York Liberty], is elevate the game and get people to respect our entire league. Not just a few teams.”

The Fever, in particular, have seen a surge in fan interest, thanks in large part to Clark’s impact. Thousands of new fans rallied behind the team last season, and with the addition of veteran talent, Indiana now has a more well-rounded roster featuring both established stars and rising young players.

A New Era for Indiana Basketball

Colson understands the significance of playing for a team that has quickly become one of the most talked-about franchises in the WNBA. She sees how the Fever’s resurgence has not only transformed the team but also made a broader impact on the community.

“You’re seeing a team that’s now affecting the economy in the city,” she noted. “People coming from out of town, out of state, out of the country maybe even to see games.”

With a mix of young talent and veteran leadership, Indiana is positioning itself as a legitimate contender. Colson’s experience and energy will be crucial as the Fever look to build on last year’s playoff success and take the next step toward becoming one of the league’s elite teams.
