Broncos Make Key Move by Signing Veteran Running Back J.K. Dobbins
The Denver Broncos have officially made a significant addition to their backfield. Head coach Sean Payton has announced the signing of veteran running back J.K. Dobbins, bringing in an experienced and dynamic playmaker to bolster the team’s offense. This move adds much-needed depth to a position that has been a major area of concern for Denver heading into the 2024 season.
Addressing a Major Need
Throughout the offseason, the Broncos have been focused on improving several key areas of their roster. While they made major investments on defense and secured veteran tight end Evan Engram to support rookie quarterback Bo Nix, one glaring hole remained in the running back room. With last season’s leading rusher, Javonte Williams, departing for the Dallas Cowboys in free agency, Denver found itself with an inexperienced group of backs.
Before signing Dobbins, the Broncos’ running back depth chart included Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Tyler Badie, and Blake Watson. Dobbins Brings Talent and Experience
Dobbins, a former second-round pick out of Ohio State, has demonstrated his ability to be a productive runner when healthy. Last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, he posted a career-high 905 rushing yards while averaging an impressive 4.6 yards per carry. He also showcased his ability to find the end zone, scoring nine rushing touchdowns.
One of Dobbins’ strengths is his versatility. Payton has always valued running backs who can contribute as receivers, and Dobbins fits the bill. In 2023, he recorded a career-high 32 receptions for 153 yards, making him an asset in the passing game. That’s more than the combined receiving totals of Denver’s four other running backs from last season, highlighting how valuable his addition could be for the team.
However, injuries have been a concern throughout Dobbins’ career. In 2021, he suffered a torn ACL that sidelined him for the entire season. Then, in 2023, he missed nearly the entire year after tearing his Achilles. Despite these setbacks, Dobbins remains just 26 years old and has plenty of upside if he can stay healthy. The Broncos are hoping he can regain his form and become a key contributor in their backfield.
A Smart Financial Move for Denver
One of the biggest reasons the Broncos decided to sign Dobbins was the value he provides. According to Spotrac.com, his market value was estimated at around two years and $8.1 million. However, because he remained unsigned deep into the offseason, Denver was able to secure him at a more team-friendly price. The specifics of his contract have not been disclosed, but reports suggest it is likely a short-term deal, possibly a one-year “prove-it” contract with incentives based on performance.
If Dobbins stays healthy and produces at a high level, the Broncos could benefit from having a quality starting-caliber running back without making a long-term financial commitment. If he struggles with injuries again, the team won’t be locked into a costly deal.
Impact on the Broncos’ Draft Strategy
Even with Dobbins in the fold, the Broncos are still expected to target a running back in the upcoming NFL Draft. With the 20th overall pick, they may look to select a top prospect like Ashton Jeanty or Omarion Hampton. Adding a rookie alongside Dobbins would give Denver a solid one-two punch in the backfield, allowing them to ease a younger back into the offense while relying on a veteran presence.
