The Seattle Seahawks continue to make moves to bolster their roster during the offseason, officially signing cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles to a contract. The team announced the addition of the young defensive back as they look to improve their secondary depth heading into the 2025 NFL season.
Shemar Jean-Charles, a former fifth-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2021, brings experience and versatility to Seattle’s defense. The 25-year-old cornerback was selected out of Appalachian State, where he had a standout college career. During his senior year with the Mountaineers, Jean-Charles led the nation with 17 pass breakups, earning first-team All-American honors from Pro Football Focus. His ball-hawking skills and aggressive play style made him an intriguing prospect coming out of college.
After being drafted by Green Bay, Jean-Charles spent two seasons with the Packers, primarily contributing on special teams and providing depth in the secondary. During his time in Green Bay, he appeared in 20 games, recording a total of 11 tackles. Although his role on defense was limited, Jean-Charles made his mark as a reliable special teams player, showcasing his tackling ability and speed in coverage.
In 2023, Jean-Charles spent time with the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad, continuing to develop his skills while waiting for another opportunity in the league. Now, the Seahawks have given him a chance to prove himself once again as they aim to build a competitive defensive backfield.
Seattle’s decision to sign Jean-Charles comes as the team looks to create competition and depth at the cornerback position. With standout players like Riq Woolen, Devon Witherspoon, and Tre Brown leading the group, Jean-Charles will have to fight for a spot on the 53-man roster. However, his experience on special teams and his ability to play both outside and in the slot could help him carve out a role in Seattle.
The Seahawks have made it clear this offseason that improving their defense is a priority, especially after a 2024 season where the team struggled with consistency on that side of the ball. Adding a player like Jean-Charles gives Seattle another option as they work through offseason workouts, minicamp, and training camp.
For Jean-Charles, this signing represents an opportunity to restart his NFL journey with a team known for developing talented defensive backs. The Seahawks have a rich history of success with players in their secondary, and Jean-Charles will hope to be the next cornerback to thrive in Seattle’s system. Fans can expect to see him competing hard for a roster spot when training camp opens later this summer.
