The Washington, D.C., NFL team adopted the name “Commanders” in 2022 after eschewing the “Redskins” moniker and logo in 2020. However, one former player seems to desire the team to return to its origins. Former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III begged the organization to return to its vintage uniforms with the Washington Redskins insignia on the side of the helmet in a social media post. In an article on X, the social media platform that was formerly known as Twitter, Griffin stated, “It’s time to bring back the old UNIFORMS.” Josh Harris, the owner of the Washington club, stated in a recent interview that the team would not be returning to the previous name and was instead planning to stick with the Washington Commanders moving forward.
However, Griffin seemed clear to specify in his post that he wanted the uniforms to make a comeback, not necessarily the team name. While that is still unlikely, given the franchise’s desire to distance itself from the old name, it’s not completely out of the question for the team to embrace the old logo in some capacity, even if it is not on the uniform.
Back in November, Montana Sen. Steve Daines, who has been a vocal advocate for the return of the old logo, told Fox News America Reports that talks are currently underway for the team to embrace the logo once again in some capacity, even if it isn’t as part of their uniform.
“There’s good faith in negotiations going forward that’s going to allow this logo to be used again,” Daines said back in November.
The team is not considering embracing the logo on its uniform or as its full-time logo, but the team has informed Wetzel that the old logo could now be used on throwback gear.
“In September, Commanders and NFL representatives visited the family in Montana and hosted them in Maryland to unveil a memorial to Wetzel. The family and team have also discussed creating a foundation to support Native American causes, though details have not been finalized, and the team has assured the family it will no longer edit out the old logo from throwback gear,” the Washington Post reported back in November
As for the throwback uniform, it’s unlikely that RGIII will get his wish.
