Virginia Tech Football Expected to Improve in 2025

Could Virginia Tech be on the rise in 2025?

The outlook for the Hokies heading into the 2025 season feels quite different from the anticipation surrounding the 2024 campaign. Last season, expectations were high, but Virginia Tech struggled under head coach Brent Pry in his third year, finishing the regular season at 6-6 before falling to Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Following the disappointing season, Pry made significant coaching changes, parting ways with three assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Chris Marve. Additionally, former offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen departed to join Ohio State’s staff as an offensive line coach. To fill these vacancies, Pry brought in Sam Siefkes as the new defensive coordinator and Philip Montgomery to lead the offense.

While it remains to be seen how these coaching adjustments will impact the program, one thing became clear last season—change was necessary. With new staff members and several transfer portal additions, Virginia Tech was recently identified as one of five programs expected to improve in 2025.

Andrew Boardwine of Saturday Blitz included the Hokies in his article, “5 College Football Teams That Will Improve in 2025, But Their Record Won’t Show It.” While progress is anticipated, Boardwine notes that Virginia Tech’s schedule will be considerably more challenging than last year’s.

The Hokies open the season against South Carolina and Vanderbilt, both tough matchups with a retooled roster. On top of that, their ACC schedule includes formidable opponents such as Florida State, Miami, Louisville, and NC State. With such a demanding slate, improvements may not necessarily translate into a significantly better record.

This season is crucial for Pry, as noticeable progress is needed to demonstrate the program is heading in the right direction. While the team could improve overall, reaching at least 6-6 or 7-5 might be essential to showing tangible growth.
