Vikings Land Quarterback Sam Howell in Draft-Day Trade with Seahawks
The Minnesota Vikings made a notable move during the NFL Draft, acquiring quarterback Sam Howell from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade that involved a swap of fifth-round picks. In the deal, Minnesota sent the 142nd overall pick to Seattle and received the 172nd overall selection in return, along with Howell, providing the Vikings with a young quarterback who brings valuable starting experience.
Sam Howell, who is only 24 years old, started all 17 games for the Washington Commanders during the 2023 season. In that year, he threw for an impressive 3,946 yards. However, he also struggled with turnovers and pressure, leading the league with 21 interceptions and enduring 65 sacks while playing for a Commanders team that finished with a disappointing 4-13 record. Despite these challenges, Howell showed flashes of strong play and resilience, and now gets a fresh start in a more quarterback-friendly environment under Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.
O’Connell has a proven track record of getting the best out of quarterbacks. Most recently, he helped guide Sam Darnold to a career-best season in 2024, earning Darnold a Pro Bowl selection. Following that breakout year, Darnold signed with the Seahawks, leaving the Vikings to seek additional depth behind their current quarterback of the future, J.J. McCarthy.
McCarthy, who was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is expected to take over as Minnesota’s starting quarterback this season. After missing his entire rookie year due to a preseason knee injury, McCarthy is finally ready to step onto the field. With such a critical young talent in place, having a reliable backup like Howell, who has significant starting experience, is seen as a smart move by the Vikings’ front office.
Currently, the only other backup quarterback on Minnesota’s roster is Brett Rypien, a veteran who has started just four games over six NFL seasons. By bringing in Howell, the Vikings not only add depth but also inject youth and potential into their quarterback room. Howell’s ability to extend plays with his mobility and willingness to take shots downfield could fit well with O’Connell’s offensive scheme.
For the Seahawks, the trade helps them recoup some draft capital after acquiring Darnold, and gives Howell a better opportunity to develop elsewhere. Given that Seattle has now committed to Darnold as their starter, moving Howell made sense for both parties.
The Vikings believe Howell’s upside is still untapped, especially considering the struggles he faced behind a shaky offensive line in Washington. Under the right coaching and system, Minnesota hopes he can thrive as a backup and possibly push for a bigger role if needed.
Overall, this move reflects Minnesota’s commitment to building strong depth at the game’s most important position, ensuring they are prepared for whatever challenges the upcoming season might bring.
