Spurs to Sign Bismack Biyombo for Remainder of Season
The San Antonio Spurs are finalizing a deal to bring in veteran center Bismack Biyombo for the rest of the season. The move is aimed at bolstering the team’s frontcourt depth as they continue to develop their young core.
Biyombo, a 6-foot-8 defensive specialist, has been a free agent since parting ways with the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this season. With his shot-blocking ability and rebounding presence, he provides valuable experience to a Spurs team focused on building around their young star, Victor Wembanyama.
The veteran big man started the season with Memphis, playing in 30 games and averaging 5.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. His stint with the Grizzlies ended after the team waived him in January to make roster space following the return of key players from injury. Since then, he has remained available, waiting for an opportunity to contribute to an NBA team.
San Antonio has been exploring ways to strengthen its interior presence, particularly to support Wembanyama, their No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. While Wembanyama has showcased elite defensive abilities, adding an experienced rim protector like Biyombo allows the Spurs to manage their young star’s workload more effectively. Biyombo’s veteran leadership and defensive expertise will provide immediate value, especially in matchups requiring physicality in the paint.
Head coach Gregg Popovich has historically utilized defensive-minded big men effectively, and Biyombo’s skill set aligns well with San Antonio’s needs. He brings a strong defensive presence, rebounding ability, and veteran experience that can help guide the Spurs’ younger players as they continue their development.
Biyombo has played 13 seasons in the NBA, suiting up for teams like the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, Orlando Magic, and Toronto Raptors before his brief stint in Memphis. Known primarily for his defensive abilities, he has built a career as a reliable shot-blocker and rebounder who thrives in a supporting role.
San Antonio has struggled this season, sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. While their focus remains on player development and securing a bright future, adding a veteran like Biyombo can provide stability in the short term. His presence in the locker room could also be beneficial for younger players adjusting to the NBA’s demands.
The Spurs’ decision to sign Biyombo for the remainder of the season indicates their commitment to providing structure around Wembanyama while also evaluating veteran talent that could play a role beyond this season. With the signing expected to be finalized soon, Biyombo will have a chance to integrate into the team’s system and contribute in the final stretch of the season.
For the Spurs, bringing in Biyombo is a low-risk move that offers defensive reinforcement and leadership. While they may not be competing for a playoff spot this season, his experience and skill set could play an important role in shaping the team’s development moving forward.
