Former Dolphins First-Round Pick Join Minnesota Vikings
Opinions on Ryan Tannehill among Miami Dolphins fans vary, but there’s no denying he has been one of the better quarterbacks the team has had in recent decades. While his time in Miami had its challenges, including injuries, an ineffective coaching staff, and an organization that struggled with stability, Tannehill still outperformed many of his predecessors.
Now seeking a new opportunity after spending the 2023 season with the Tennessee Titans, the veteran quarterback is expected to have several teams interested in his services. Jeff Diamond of The 33rd Team predicts that Tannehill could land with the Minnesota Vikings, a team in need of an experienced quarterback to support J.J. McCarthy.
“The Vikings still require a reliable veteran quarterback with starting experience in case McCarthy isn’t ready to perform at a high level or faces another injury setback,” Diamond explained. “McCarthy missed the entire 2024 regular season after suffering a knee meniscus injury in the preseason opener. This is where 36-year-old Ryan Tannehill comes into the picture. A former first-round selection by the Dolphins, he started six seasons in Miami before being traded to Tennessee in 2019.”
The situation with McCarthy is similar to what the Dolphins experienced early in Tua Tagovailoa’s career—uncertainty about how he will transition to the NFL, especially following last year’s injury. Although McCarthy had an impressive college career at Michigan and is expected to thrive in Kevin O’Connell’s system, the Vikings may want a dependable backup in case he struggles.
If needed, Tannehill could step in and provide a steady presence for the team, making him a logical choice for Minnesota as they prepare for the upcoming season.
