Seahawks Add Veteran Wide Receiver Steven Sims for Offensive Depth and Special Teams Boost
The Seattle Seahawks have officially announced the signing of wide receiver Steven Sims, a versatile player known for his contributions as both a pass catcher and a special teams return specialist. The addition of Sims not only strengthens the Seahawks’ receiving corps but also brings valuable experience to their special teams unit, particularly in the kick and punt return game.
Sims, who went undrafted out of the University of Kansas in 2019, has built a respectable career in the NFL thanks to his ability to contribute in multiple ways. After signing as a rookie free agent, he initially joined the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) and quickly proved himself as a reliable option in the return game. Over the years, Sims has also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens, providing each team with depth at wide receiver and as a dependable special teams player.
Throughout his NFL career, Sims has accumulated a total of 78 receptions for 704 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Additionally, he has been utilized in the running game, recording 25 carries for 174 yards, including an impressive 65-yard rushing touchdown that showcased his explosiveness and versatility.
However, where Sims has truly made his mark in the league is on special teams. Over the course of 53 regular-season games, Sims has proven to be a consistent and productive return man. He has fielded 74 punt returns for 462 yards and has returned 62 kickoffs for 819 yards. One of his career highlights came during his rookie season when he recorded a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, a performance that earned him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Sims also made a memorable impact in the postseason as a member of the Houston Texans. During a Divisional Round playoff game two seasons ago, he returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown, demonstrating his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations. That play further solidified his reputation as a dynamic and dangerous return specialist capable of changing the momentum of a game.
For the Seahawks, the signing of Sims provides depth behind their primary wide receivers while adding a player with proven playmaking ability in the return game. His experience and production on special teams could prove invaluable as the Seahawks look to improve their field position battles and create explosive plays on returns.
Seattle has shown a consistent effort this offseason to bolster competition and depth across multiple positions, and bringing in a player like Sims fits that approach. With his ability to contribute in several facets of the game, Sims could carve out a significant role on the roster, especially if he secures the job as the team’s primary return specialist.
The Seahawks’ current wide receiver group is led by stars like DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but adding a versatile piece like Sims gives them insurance in case of injuries while potentially adding another weapon for the offense and special teams.
Additionally, Sims’ track record as a reliable returner could take pressure off other players in those roles, allowing Seattle to keep its top receivers focused on offensive duties rather than risking injury on special teams.
As the team continues to prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Sims adds another layer of depth and experience. If he can replicate his past success in Seattle, the Seahawks may have found a valuable contributor capable of impacting games both as a receiver and a return specialist.
