Former Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill in Talks With Vikings
After sitting out the entire 2024 NFL season, former Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is looking for a fresh start, and the Minnesota Vikings could provide that opportunity. According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, the Vikings have held discussions with Tannehill about a potential deal, though talks are ongoing and no agreement is close at this time.
Tannehill, selected eighth overall by the Dolphins in the 2012 NFL Draft, spent six seasons in Miami. He threw for 20,434 yards and 123 touchdowns, ranking third in franchise history behind Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Bob Griese in both categories. Despite flashes of strong play, Tannehill never fully lived up to his first-round status. Miami eventually dealt him to the Tennessee Titans, along with a 2019 sixth-round pick, in exchange for a 2020 fourth-rounder and a 2019 seventh-round pick.
While there’s no immediate deal expected, Tannehill could be a logical addition for the Vikings. Minnesota needs an experienced quarterback to work alongside rookie J.J. McCarthy but wants to avoid creating a full-blown competition at the position. For Tannehill, joining the Vikings as McCarthy’s mentor could be his way back into the league. The role would allow him to guide the young quarterback while staying ready in case of injury or struggles.
However, Tannehill will need to embrace being a backup — something he wasn’t willing to do last season while waiting for a starting opportunity that never came. Perhaps a year away from the game has shifted his mindset, making him more open to a supporting role as he looks to extend his NFL career.
