The Philadelphia Eagles have once again prioritized rewarding key members of their roster, this time surprising many by extending a contract for one of their veteran players. On Monday, the team announced that All-Pro offensive tackle Lane Johnson has agreed to a one-year contract extension. This new deal will keep Johnson in Philadelphia through the 2027 season.
Much like the Eagles did recently with running back Saquon Barkley, the organization went out of its way to secure Johnson’s future and show appreciation for his importance to the team’s success. Johnson, a crucial part of Philadelphia’s offensive line, continues to prove his value, prompting the team to act early in solidifying his place on the roster.
In addition to the extra year added to his contract, the Eagles reportedly restructured the remaining two years of Johnson’s existing deal to increase his earnings. Originally, Johnson was set to earn $17.4 million in the upcoming season and $22.4 million in 2025. Combined, that totaled just under $40 million over the next two years. However, the new adjustment raises that amount to $48 million, with a significant $40 million guaranteed.
At 35 years old, Johnson has openly acknowledged the idea of retirement in recent years. He addressed the subject again leading up to last month’s Super Bowl, reassuring Eagles fans that he would return for at least one more season. Johnson’s future has been viewed as a year-to-year decision, with his age and injury history playing factors in those conversations.
Despite that uncertainty, the Eagles chose to move forward with this extension, a gesture that likely stems from their appreciation and respect for Johnson’s loyalty and performance since being drafted in 2013. Over the years, he has been a cornerstone of the team’s offensive success and played a significant role in their Super Bowl-winning campaign.
By securing Johnson with this new deal, the Eagles not only maintain stability along their offensive line but also send a strong message about how they value their veterans. Even without the pressure to extend him now, the team made sure Johnson is well-compensated and appreciated as he continues to anchor one of the league’s best offensive fronts.
