Pain Departure: Mike McDaniel Announced The Departure Of Two Top Experienced Key Starter After Failed Contract Negotiation

The Miami Dolphins have announced the release of three veteran players: running back Raheem Mostert, cornerback Kendall Fuller, and tight end Durham Smythe.

Raheem Mostert

Raheem Mostert, 32, joined the Dolphins in 2022, reuniting with head coach Mike McDaniel from their time with the San Francisco 49ers. In his first season with Miami, Mostert led the team in rushing with 891 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.  He earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2023 after setting franchise records with 21 total touchdowns and 18 rushing touchdowns Despite his contributions, the Dolphins will save approximately $2.9 million in cap space by releasing Mostert.

Kendall Fuller

Cornerback Kendall Fuller, who turned 30 just a day before his release, spent one season with the Dolphins. His time in Miami was marred by injuries, including two concussions and a late-season knee issue, leading him to miss six games. Fuller’s release contributes to the team’s efforts to create salary cap flexibility ahead of the 2025 season.

Durham Smythe

Tight end Durham Smythe, drafted by Miami in 2018, played 112 games with 74 starts over seven seasons. He recorded 132 receptions for 1,228 yards and three touchdowns during his tenure. Smythe’s release is part of the Dolphins’ roster overhaul as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Financial Implications

Collectively, releasing Mostert, Fuller, and Smythe frees up approximately $7.88 million in cap space for the Dolphins, though it also results in $9.07 million in dead money.

Looking Ahead

These roster moves signify Miami’s strategy to reshape the team and manage salary cap constraints ahead of the 2025 season. The Dolphins are expected to explore options in free agency and the upcoming NFL Draft to fill the voids left by these veteran departures.
