Although the 2025 NHL trade deadline has officially passed, some last-minute agreements are still being made. The Boston Bruins made the decision to act as sellers before the deadline, and they sent team captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, one of their fiercest rivals, just before the deadline. The Bruins have a 28-28-8 record and have dealt away a number of players before the deadline since they haven’t lived up to expectations this season. As Boston sought to start rebuilding their roster, Trent Frederic, Justin Brazeau, and Charlie Coyle all found new homes before Marchand was dealt.
Marchand’s name has been floating around in rumors for a couple weeks now, but there was also a possibility that he could sign a contract extension to finish his career with the only team he had ever played for. That won’t be happening, though, as he got dealt to the Panthers in a stunning trade.
Still pending league call, but told Brad Marchand is going to Florida,” Pierre LeBrun of TSN reported in a post on X.
Florida, of course, has ended Boston’s campaign the past two seasons. They pulled off a shocking rally from a 3-1 deficit in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs to send the Bruins historic 2022-23 squad home for the offseason. And last year, the Panthers eliminated the Bruins in their second-round matchup in six games.
Marchand’s illustrious Boston career will now come to an end when he joins the opposing side of this rivalry. Marchand scored 422 goals and had 554 helpers over his 16 seasons with the Bruins. The team’s most recent Stanley Cup victory came in 2011, and he was a four-time All-Star. Marchand is currently battling an upper-body injury, so Florida will have to wait a little while longer to see him play when they return to the ice on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres.
