Former Lions running back has been released by the New Orleans Saints after two seasons with the team. The Saints made the announcement on Tuesday, parting ways with the veteran back who was set to earn $3.15 million in salary and account for $4.63 million against the cap. By releasing him, the team will incur $2.34 million in dead cap but free up $1.59 million in space.
Williams originally planned to stay with the Detroit Lions in 2023, but contract negotiations fell apart. As a result, the Lions shifted their focus to David Montgomery, signing him to a three-year, $18 million contract ($11 million guaranteed), while Williams joined the Saints on a three-year, $12 million deal ($8.15 million guaranteed).
The difference in performance between the two backs over the next two seasons was significant. Williams struggled, recording 154 carries for 470 yards (3.1 yards per carry) and two touchdowns, along with 27 receptions for 119 yards.
Meanwhile, Montgomery thrived in Detroit, rushing for 1,790 yards on 404 carries (4.1 yards per carry) with 25 touchdowns and adding 52 catches for 458 yards. His strong play earned him a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.
While team situations played a role—Detroit boasted an elite offensive line compared to the Saints’ struggles—it was a testament to Lions general manager Brad Holmes’ decision-making. Holmes remained firm during negotiations with Williams and ultimately found a more productive replacement without a significant increase in cost.
Since Williams was released rather than reaching the end of his contract, he is now free to sign with any team immediately.
