Panthers Move On from Veteran Linebacker
For the first time in ten years, the Carolina Panthers will begin a season without Shaq Thompson leading their defense. The team announced Monday that the longtime linebacker, who has been a foundational piece since 2015, will be released and allowed to test free agency. This move signals the end of an important chapter for the franchise and a player who was central to the team’s identity. However, it also reflects Carolina’s need to take a new direction as they rebuild.
A Career Marked by Leadership and Determination
Thompson’s time with the Panthers was characterized by his leadership and reliability—until injuries took their toll. Selected in the first round of the 2015 draft, he quickly became a core part of a defense featuring stars like Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. Over nine seasons, Thompson recorded 752 tackles—ranking fourth in franchise history—and was named a team captain five times. Despite recent setbacks, including a fractured fibula in 2023 and a torn Achilles in 2024, his contributions on and off the field were invaluable.
“We are grateful for Shaq’s leadership and commitment over the past decade,” said Panthers GM Dan Morgan. “He gave everything to his teammates and always pushed them to be their best.”
