NHL Trade Tracker 2024-2025: Rangers Land JT Miller, Stars Acquire Mikael Granlund
The long-awaited trade of JT Miller has finally happened. The Vancouver Canucks have sent the veteran forward to the New York Rangers in exchange for Filip Chytil and a conditional first-round pick. Also heading to New York are defenseman Erik Brannstrom and prospect Jack Dorrington, while defenseman Victor Mancini joins the Canucks.
This marks Miller’s return to the Rangers, where he spent the first six seasons of his career. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, only 12 players have scored more than Miller’s 312 points. The 30-year-old forward will add scoring and playmaking to a Rangers team currently five points outside the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
Although Miller has struggled this season with just nine goals and 26 assists in 40 games, a fresh start could help him regain the 103-point form he showcased last year. By moving his $8 million cap hit, which runs for another five seasons, Vancouver creates financial flexibility while adding speed and skill with Chytil, who has 164 points in 378 career games.
Stars Strengthen Roster with Granlund and Ceci
The Dallas Stars have reinforced their offense by acquiring veteran forward Mikael Granlund from the San Jose Sharks, along with defenseman Cody Ceci. Granlund, 32, is having a strong season with 15 goals and 30 assists in 52 games—on pace for a career-high 70 points.
With Tyler Seguin on long-term injured reserve, the Stars had the cap space to make the deal. Granlund is expected to slot into Dallas’ middle-six, possibly alongside former teammate Matt Duchene, while Ceci adds experience to the blue line. In return, the Sharks received a 2025 first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick.
Canucks Add Pettersson and O’Connor
Vancouver made another move to strengthen its defense, acquiring Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Known as a reliable shutdown defenseman, Pettersson will help solidify the Canucks’ top-four defensive unit. Forward Drew O’Connor also joins Vancouver to provide depth.
Pittsburgh, in return, received a 2025 first-round pick, winger Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, and prospect Melvin Fernstrom.
Flyers and Flames Swap Players
A less high-profile but intriguing trade saw the Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames exchange multiple players. Philadelphia sent Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost—both of whom have shown offensive potential but seemed to have hit their ceiling with the Flyers—in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier.
Kuzmenko has a reputation for streaky goal-scoring, which could give Philadelphia an offensive boost, while Pelletier, a former first-round pick, has yet to secure a consistent NHL role.
Islanders Acquire Scott Perunovich
The New York Islanders addressed their defensive needs by acquiring Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues. In return, the Blues received a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick.
Hurricanes and Avalanche Pull Off Major Trade
In a blockbuster move, the Colorado Avalanche traded pending free agent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes, who added one of the league’s top scorers to an already competitive team. To make the trade work, the Chicago Blackhawks retained 50% of Rantanen’s salary and received a 2025 third-round pick from Carolina in return.
Colorado, meanwhile, acquired Martin Nečas, a younger and cheaper option, allowing them to create cap space for future moves.
Avalanche Add Forward Depth
The Avalanche also bolstered their forward group by adding Juuso Parssinen in a separate deal.
Stay tuned for more updates as NHL trades continue throughout the season.
