Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer crafted a hypothetical trade scenario in which the Phillies acquire Red Sox All-Star in exchange for Alec Bohm, Nick Castellanos, and top infield prospect Aidan Miller. This proposal, highlighted by Michael Brauner of Philadelphia Phillies on SI, presents an intriguing shift for both teams.
Devers’ Offensive Strength vs. Defensive Concerns
Devers is widely recognized as one of the league’s premier sluggers. In 2024, he posted a .272 batting average with 87 runs, 28 home runs, and 83 RBIs, maintaining a career .856 OPS. While his offensive prowess is undeniable, the Red Sox have recently leaned toward playing Alex Bregman at third base due to his superior defensive skills, leaving Devers to spend more time as a designated hitter. Bregman, the reigning Gold Glove winner, solidified Boston’s infield defense, which played a role in their willingness to consider trading Devers.
Is the Price Too High for Philadelphia?
While Devers would undoubtedly boost the Phillies’ lineup, the trade proposal raises concerns about whether Philadelphia would be giving up too much. Bohm, an All-Star in 2024, showcased strong offensive production, despite a second-half slump. Castellanos, a reliable veteran, remains an important piece in the Phillies’ outfield. Additionally, Aidan Miller, the Phillies’ No. 1 prospect, is regarded as a key future asset for the organization.
Considering the talent involved, Philadelphia may hesitate to part with so many valuable pieces for Devers, especially given their existing offensive firepower. While the trade would certainly make headlines, the Phillies might be better off keeping their core intact rather than pursuing such a high-risk blockbuster deal.
