ESPN REPORT: Virginia Tech football Lands Another Top Veteran Man

Virginia Tech Hires  as Offensive Coordinator

Virginia Tech has officially named veteran coach Philip Montgomery as its new offensive coordinator. Montgomery, who previously served as Tulsa’s head coach, will take over the role left vacant after Tyler Bowen departed to join Ohio State’s staff as an offensive line coach.

Last week, reports suggested that Virginia Tech was eyeing Buffalo Bills defensive quality control coach Christian Taylor as Bowen’s replacement. However, discussions around Taylor eventually faded, leading to speculation about other potential candidates.

On Monday morning, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Hokies head coach Brent Pry had shifted focus to Montgomery for the position. Shortly after, Virginia Tech confirmed the hiring, welcoming Montgomery to the staff.

While the search process took longer than expected, Montgomery’s hiring appears to be a strong move for Pry and the Hokies. With head coaching experience at Tulsa and a background in developing quarterbacks, Montgomery brings a wealth of knowledge to the program. He previously coached Robert Griffin III at Baylor and worked with Case Keenum and Bryce Petty. In 2013, he was a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award after helping Baylor secure a Big 12 championship.

Montgomery also has history with Virginia Tech, having faced the Hokies in the 2015 Independence Bowl during his first year as Tulsa’s head coach. That game ended in a 55-52 victory for Virginia Tech in Frank Beamer’s final game.

His experience at Baylor could be beneficial for quarterback Kyron Drones, a former Baylor transfer who joined Virginia Tech before the 2023 season. Additionally, the Hokies return Pop Watson, giving Montgomery multiple options to build his offensive schemes.

With spring practices approaching, Montgomery will have limited time to install his system and prepare Virginia Tech’s offense for the upcoming season.
