Good news: Hokies Football Complete Another Important Signing

Virginia Tech has made a major move in shaping its offensive future by hiring former Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery as the team’s new offensive coordinator. The Hokies are bringing in Montgomery to rejuvenate their offensive attack, leveraging his extensive experience in play-calling and quarterback development.

Montgomery most recently served as the offensive coordinator at Auburn for the 2023 season under head coach Hugh Freeze. However, after just one season, Auburn decided to part ways with Montgomery, leading him to seek new opportunities. Prior to his time at Auburn, he was the head coach at Tulsa from 2015 to 2022, compiling an overall record of 43-53 over eight seasons. Under his leadership, Tulsa’s offense was known for its aggressive, up-tempo style, often ranking among the nation’s best in passing production.

During his tenure at Tulsa, Montgomery helped develop multiple standout quarterbacks, including Dane Evans and Davis Brin. His offensive schemes placed a strong emphasis on the passing game, often utilizing spread concepts to create explosive plays. Before taking over at Tulsa, Montgomery was the offensive coordinator at Baylor under Art Briles, where he helped mold a high-powered offense that consistently ranked among the top in the nation.

Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry has prioritized offensive improvement as the team looks to take the next step in its rebuilding process. The Hokies finished the 2023 season with a 7-6 record, showing promise but also struggling at times on offense. Montgomery’s arrival is expected to bring a more dynamic approach, particularly in the passing game, which has been inconsistent in recent years.

Montgomery’s coaching background suggests that Virginia Tech’s offense could shift toward a more aggressive and creative playstyle. His track record of working with quarterbacks should benefit the Hokies, who are looking to establish consistency at the position. Virginia Tech’s offensive production has been a concern in recent seasons, and Montgomery’s hiring signals a clear effort to modernize the unit.

Virginia Tech fans will be eager to see how Montgomery’s system translates to the ACC. If he can replicate the success he had at Baylor and in his early years at Tulsa, the Hokies could take a significant step forward. The 2024 season will be a crucial test for Montgomery and the Virginia Tech offense as they aim to compete for a stronger finish in the conference standings.
