ESPN projects a free agent to earn $88 million. Next month, Byron Murphy is probably going to leave the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings must decide whether to put Murphy or Camryn Bynum, their safety, first, according to multiple reports. Despite Murphy’s stellar 2024 season, it appears the organisation is leaning towards re-signing Bynum as of this article. The Vikings, who have other openings to fill after perhaps losing cornerback Stephon Gilmore to retirement, will be looking for something less expensive.
It makes sense because there will be cornerbacks available in free agency the following month who could be an affordable substitute. Nonetheless, Murphy might entice some teams this offseason to make offers to him that Minnesota is unlikely to match, making it simpler to let him go. The former Washington product, who was first chosen in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, replaced Cameron Dantzler and Patrick Peterson as one of the largest expenditures in the secondary. In 14 games with 14 starts, he recorded a career-high 13 pass deflections and three interceptions.
Murphy got better even though the secondary room had a bunch of cornerbacks from Gilmore and was competing against Shaq Griffin. Eventually, Murphy won the job to regain his role and ended the 024 campaign with 62 solo tackles and a career-high six interceptions, recording a Pro Bowl nod. It’s easy to see why he should receive interest this offseason and teams like the Saints, Chargers could pursue him.
The New Orleans Saints are unlikely to pay the asking price for Murphy, but everything is possible under general manager Mickey Loomis’s leadership. Tyrann Mathieu is one of the team’s players whose futures are unknown this offseason because of pay cap issues. Maybe the Saints could cut the veteran and give Murphy financial freedom. After trading Marshon Lattimore to Washington in a trade last season, this would enable the team to acquire a competent cornerback for their secondary unit.
The Saints’ top aim is to get an explosive replacement for cornerback Paulson Adebo, who is expected to test the free agent market. Murphy satisfies every requirement that Kellen Moore, the new head coach, might have for a defender. The Saints must rewire their defence just as they will their offence. The only cornerback on the roster with potential upside right now is Kool-Aid McKinstry.
