As part of the last preparations for the 2025 Draft in Green Bay, six players from the Virginia Tech football team of 2024 will travel to the NFL Combine this month. The names of a few former Hokies ought to be mentioned at the podium this season. Although no Virginia Tech players are currently expected to be selected in the first two rounds on the final weekend, a former Hokies wide receiver is selected on the second day of the draft according to a recent mock draft.
According to NFL.com’s most recent mock draft, the Miami Dolphins will select wide receiver Jaylin Lane in the third round. Considering how well he practiced for the Reese’s Senior Bowl last month, that is not shocking. His performance opened some eyes. He was selected as a standout at one point throughout the week, surpassing some of the draft’s top receivers, according to some observers. Lane had 38 receptions for 466 yards and two touchdowns this past season, including a 66-yard catch and run versus Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend. Lane transferred from Middle Tennessee State for the 2023 season. This season, he also returned punts following Tucker Holloway’s season-ending injury. He punted back against Marshall in Week 2 for a touchdown.
Lane, a 5-foot-10, 196-pound native from Clover, South Carolina, averaged 13.1 yards per catch in 2023, hauling in 41 receptions for 538 yards and six touchdowns. He has breakaway speed from defenders, as demonstrated against Marshall and Virginia, and he was also used in the running game with reverses. Given his season and his performance in the Senior Bowl practices and games, it is not unexpected to see Lane’s stock increasing. Despite being projected as a fifth-round pick in some earlier mock drafts, he moved up to the third round in one of the most recent mock drafts, which is encouraging given that the draft is just 68 days away.
