Jared Goff will undoubtedly be the starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions for the foreseeable future as they get ready for the 2025 offseason. However, with veteran Teddy Bridgewater poised to enter free agency, the backup quarterback position is still up for grabs. Because of this uncertainty, there have been rumours that the Lions may cut ties with Hendon Hooker, their third-round pick in the 2023 draft.
The Situation With the Backup QB It became evident that Hooker’s position in Detroit was not set in stone when Bridgewater joined the Lions towards the end of the season to backup Goff. In his debut season, Hooker—who was selected as a developmental quarterback—did not play much and was even placed on the inactive list for the Lions’ playoff defeat to the Washington Commanders. Considering Goff’s long-term contract, this relegation begs the issue of his future in Detroit.
Hendon Hooker is unlikely to earn significant playing time behind Goff in Detroit at this moment. Hooker might be traded because the Lions’ roster is largely established and the majority of their key players have long-term contracts. According to TWSN’s team, the Lions will try to deal Hooker this offseason in exchange for a fourth-round pick from a team that is in dire need of a quarterback. By trading Hooker, Detroit might be able to acquire a more seasoned backup quarterback, someone who would be more qualified to replace Goff in the event of an injury. The Lions may believe that another quarterback with a track record of stepping in at crucial times would be a better fit for their requirements given Hooker’s lack of experience and growth in his rookie campaign.
For Hendon Hooker, a trade could provide the opportunity to develop into a starting role elsewhere. A move could benefit both him and the Lions, as it would give Hooker a chance to grow in a new system while allowing Detroit to address the backup quarterback position with a more reliable option for 2025 and beyond.
With all of this being said, I believe the Lions will hold on to Hooker, unless they are given an offer they cannot refuse.
